Hi everyone -- 2009 is almost gone, and we're planning to wrap up the year with a bang! Instead of holding our regular meeting at Cal Poly next week, we're planning to have a networking event/holiday party at a local pizzeria.
This shindig is scheduled for 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 19th at Pizza 'N Such in Claremont, which is located on the northeast corner of 2nd Street and Yale Avenue.
In order to encourage folks to mingle, we've reserved their back room, which seats about 15-20 people, so we'll have a semi-private area to ourselves (with overflow into their main dining area if necessary).
We're also giving away some great prizes to close out the year, including an Adobe software license (which can be used for a copy of ColdFusion 9!), and a set of the one-day ColdBox training materials (generously donated by Luis).
Please reply to the thread on our Google group if you're planning to come so we can get a sense of how many people to expect. Also, if anyone wishes to bring a friend/spouse/significant other please feel free, just add them to the head count.
Hopefully folks who aren't able to make it to meetings during the week will be able to come out for this event -- we'd love to meet some new people!

We will be holding our next meeting this Thursday, November 12th at the regular time (6:15 pm for those who are interested in networking, with the main session starting at 7:00) and place (room 5-16 of the C/L/A building at Cal Poly Pomona). Please see our meetings page for more details and directions.
Instead of an "eyes-front" presentation, we've decided to try something a little bit different this month: we're going to have a "mini code jam" focusing on the use of the jQuery UI user interface library. The idea here is to first have a brief introduction to the technology, after which we will encourage everyone who wishes to participate to write a small demo (whatever can be done in about an hour of coding), which they will then share with the group.
Anyone who doesn't have any experience with jQuery itself (the core library, not the UI widgets) may wish to familiarize themselves with the basics beforehand -- this presentation from Ben Nadel is an excellent introduction to jQuery.
We'll also have at least one person providing assistance for those who might need a bit of extra help. We'd love to have as much active participation as possible, as this will provide the best learning experience for everyone involved.
Finally, as this session will not necessarily require ColdFusion, we should be able to make use of the lab's computers, so a laptop is not a requirement.
As usual, we will need to submit a request for parking permits by the end of the day today, so please respond to the meeting thread on our Google group to confirm that you wish to attend.
We hope to see you all there!

We managed to record our workshop yesterday, even though we had some projector difficulties. You can find the recording here: http://adobechats.adobe.acrobat.com/p79504808/
You can also find the resources in our meeting resources page to see the full application and assets.

Our October meeting is rapidly approaching -- instead of a presentation, our fearless leader Luis is going to run a workshop on getting started with ColdBox. Here's his description of what he has planned:
Come and kick start your ColdBox development with this introductory workshop. We will cover the basics of ColdBox 3.0.0 and how to develop sustainable ColdFusion applications.
We are going to shift the meeting back a week to give us a bit of a breather after MAX, so we're planning to meet on Thursday the 15th, at our regular location. Also, we have decided to shift our meeting start times a little earlier in order to have some time for networking before the presentation or workshop begins. We'll be there at 6:15, and the workshop will start at 7:00, allowing for a bit of time for members to catch up with each other before the main event.
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn ColdBox directly from the author of the framework -- we hope to see you all there!

Back in July Kalen Gibbons led a Flex workshop, where he directed our group in constructing a simple Flex contact management application with a ColdFusion back end. This was a hands-on workshop containing some fantastic practical information, including some common pitfalls to avoid and instructions on how to use the debugger within Flex/Flash Builder. The recording for this session is now available here:

And the ZIP archive containing the files needed for the workshop can be found here:

Note that there were some audio difficulties at the beginning of the session, so it has been edited to start after these issues were resolved -- Kalen recaps the portion that is missing in order to allow Connect attendees to follow along.
