April Meeting - Joseph Lamoree and Nginx

General, Meetings, News

For our April IECFUG meeting we're happy to have Joseph Lamoree here to tell us about Nginx.

Nginx (pronounced "Engine-X") is a high-performance, cross-platform, open source web server that can replace Apache or IIS and works nicely with CFML web applications. I've been using Nginx in production deployments for several years with great results. It has many features that make it an attractive choice as reverse proxy in front of a CFML engine running in a JEE server such as Tomcat. Using HTTP headers, Nginx can communicate important data about the connected user agent to the application. I intend to provide all the information necessary to deploy Nginx successfully, showing demos and real-world examples. The following are the topics I will cover in detail:

  • Installing Nginx as a managed service
  • Creating public and private paths
  • Enforcing SSL
  • Virtual hosts and hostname aliasing
  • URL rewriting for SES and resource mapping
  • Using Sendfile to replace CFCONTENT and free engine threads faster
  • High availability web apps using failover
  • High performance web apps using load balancing
  • Using upstream HTTP headers
  • Enhanced logging
  • Server monitoring
  • Suppressing superfluous response information
  • Content compression and caching
  • Sending client caching instructions
  • Passing geolocation data to an application

There will be free food, drinks, and opportunities to network with other CF developers from the area.  We also have some goodies to give away, so don't miss out!

July Meeting - CF Closures with Mark Mandel

General, Meetings, News

For the month of July the IECFUG will be hosting the illustrious Mark Mandel, who will be talking about closures in ColdFusion.

Getting closure on Closures

It seems like all the cool kids are getting on the Closure bandwagon these days.  ColdFusion is no exception with Closures coming to ColdFusion 10 in the near future, but what is the hype all about?

Are closures really the programming nirvana that we've all been looking for, a well marketed snake oil of fancy programmatic syntax, or something in between?

We'll look at exactly what Closures are, and how the can help you out with your day to day programming tasks, as well as other real world examples that will help show off the power of closures for those more tricky problems.

About Mark Mandel

Mark Mandel is a full time consultant and lead developer on several open source projects, most notably ColdSpring, JavaLoader, Transfer ORM and ColdDoc and has been has been working with ColdFusion for a number of years, including at his very own dot com back in the late 90's.

Mark can often be found blogging at www.compoundtheory.com, which has housed his thoughts on ColdFusion, Java and various aspects of software development for several years.  He can also be found as a regular poster on ColdFusion mailing lists, causing havoc in the #coldfusion channel on Dalnet irc network and podcasting on www.2ddu.com.

When he's not too busy writing open source software and consulting he enjoys spending his extra time training martial arts in a wide variety of disciplines and reading way too much fantasy literature.

We’ll be meeting this Thursday, July 19th, starting at 6:30PM.  As always, there will be free pizza, drinks, and opportunities to connect with fellow members of the CF community.

November Meeting - Dave Ferguson on Mobile

General, Meetings, News

ColdFusion for Mobile

Come join us this Thursday, November 17th, at the IECFUG for a fantastic presentation by Dave Ferguson on mobile application development with ColdFusion.

"Mobile development is a largely moving target. New devices and device sizes are appearing almost daily. This makes application development for mobile devices difficult. This is where mobile browsers come in to save the day. This session will focus on creating browser-based apps for virtually any mobile device. This session will show you how to create a basic browser-based application. Then, utilizing ColdFusion, we will enhance the features of the application."

We will have prizes to give away along with the usual free food, drinks, and networking. Don’t miss out, it should be a great night full of ColdFusion goodness.

- Thanks

This Thursday, September 8th, the IECFUG is proud to host Jim Spoonmore, who will be talking to us about CouchDB.  For those who are unfamiliar with CouchDB, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a free crash course on what it is, and how it can work for your applications.

"Apache CouchDB is a document-oriented database that can be queried and indexed in a MapReduce fashion using JavaScript. CouchDB also offers incremental replication with bi-directional conflict detection and resolution.  CouchDB provides a RESTful JSON API than can be accessed from any environment that allows HTTP requests."

For more information on CouchDB, please check out: http://couchdb.apache.org/docs/intro.html
